Conquering the white water in a raft is more fun when you are prepared. This is a list of the basic essentials you may want to consider bringing on your next white-water rafting trip.
Hold on! You are in for a thrill. These are items we needed on our last white-water rafting excursion and some things that I wish I had brought.
-
Fanny pack
A pouch that will stay secure around your waist to store necessary small items.
-
Air pump and patch kit for raft or inner tube
-
Safety rope with float for rescue
-
Plenty of water
-
Headache pain medicine (in case of dehydration)
-
Wet suit (if water is cold)
-
Sunglasses with UV protection
-
Disposable waterproof camera
A nice camera could get lost or damaged during rafting through white-water so a disposable camera is recommended.
-
Swim suit
-
Non-cotton, lightweight clothing
It is not advisable to wear jeans or heavy clothing when rafting. Most cotton clothing becomes heavy when wet and can be dangerous. It also dries slowly causing chills. Loose-fitting clothing is also difficult to swim in.
Cotton shorts or lightweight are best worn over a wet suit.
-
Appropriate food items
The best type of food to bring on a white-water rafting trip are items such as orange or banana. These foods can be submerged in water without getting damaged, they will likely float, and the peel can be tossed on the ground
to compost. If you do not plan to stop by the side of the river and have a picnic, then pack quick snack items that can be eaten during slow periods on the river.
-
Drinks in plastic bottles with caps that are connected.
Water bottles are best attached to a belt at the waist. Loose items will move around in the raft or get thrown out.
-
Sunscreen
The more SPF the better. Waterproof is advisable, but plan on re-applying as the reflection of the water can burn your skin even on a cloudy day.
-
Dive shoes or water sandals
It is important that your shoes or sandals have rubber soles and will grip when wet. Tennis shoes are not advisable as they will fill with water and become heavy if you get thrown from the raft, making it difficult to swim
.
-
Visor or hat
-
Waterproof backpack or dry bag
-
Raft with paddles or inner tube
-
Light-weight plastic ice chest
Styrofoam ice chest are not suitable for a white-water rafting trip. They can break easily, leaving small pieces in the river. And Styrofoam is not biodegradable.
-
Life jacket
-
Bag for garbage
-
First aid supplies in waterproof container
-
Secure eye glasses with an elastic band (such as a crockie) or string.
-
Waterproof container for cell phone
-
Safety pin to attach car keys to clothing
Plan on getting wet!
